Some of my goals:

Reducing class size: more than 15 in an elementary school classroom is too many; more than 20 in a middle school classroom is too many; and more than 24 in a high school classroom is too many.

Ending social promotion: if a child fails, he or she should not be promoted to the next grade – period. No more cajoling from parents to push the child ahead due to the parents’ embarrassment. It will be more embarrassing to see that child on the streets illiterate and unemployed due to social promotion. It will cost society more to take care of that student when he or she is an adult then when he or she is still in school.  We need to actually teach the children instead of passing them to the next guy.

Improved nutrition in the schools: reviewing the school lunch menus that appear in the newspaper each week is an agonizing task. Reconstituted food on top of starch on top of sugar is not a healthy way to go, not to mention, too little fresh fruit and vegetables. Vending machines should be removed from the schools – period. For those school administrators who say those machines are a vital source of income, I want to see the figures to back that up. If that is actually true, let’s replace the vending machines dispensing high caloric soda, diet soda, high sodium and high sugared snacks with healthier alternatives. Let the schools not contribute to the growing obesity problem in this country.
